Indian Navy

Indian Navy (IN) alias Bharatiya Nau Sena is the Naval branch of the armed forces of India whose history can be traced back to 1612. It is the world's fifth largest and reliable three dimensional force, capable of operating above, on and under surfaces of the oceans. Navy is responsible for the Defence and security of India's maritime interests. A fleet of submarines, destroyers, freights and other support vessels operate under the Indian Navy.

The glorious and challenging career in Indian navy is entirely different from other professions. Besides giving an opportunity for the youngsters to display their leadership skills, this career bestows one with a tremendous amount of responsibility. It is a profession which gives a highest level of security and comfort that is almost unheard of in civilian life together with the chance to travel widely, meet new people and to enjoy warmth and amity. A career in Indian Navy offers immense facilities, a privileged lifestyle, a unique way of exploring ones life and of course, honour in serving the country.  

Earlier, Indian Navy was known as 'Honourable East India Company's Marine' and by 1686 the name of this force was changed to Bombay Marine, as the British commerce having shifted predominantly to Bombay. Later the force had varied names like Her Majesty's Indian Navy (in 1830), Her Majesty's Indian Marine (during 1863 to 1877) and Royal Indian Marine (in 1892). In 1934, the Royal Indian Marine was re-organised into the Royal Indian Navy and the prefix 'Royal' was dropped on 26 January 1950 with India being constituted as a Republic.

The highest post in the Indian Navy is the position of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). CNS exercises operational and administrative control of the Indian Navy from Integrated Headquarters of MOD (Navy). He is assisted by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, namely the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and the Chief of Material (COM).

The Indian Navy operates three commands, each under the control of a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief in the rank of Vice Admiral. The three Commands are: 

  • The Western Naval Command (Headquarters at Mumbai).
  • The Eastern Naval Command (Head quarters at Visakhapatnam)
  • The Southern Naval Command (Headquarters at Kochi)

The Western and the Eastern Naval Command are operational commands and exercise control over operations in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal respectively. The Southern Command is designed as the Training Command, operating on the Arabian Sea. Besides these, the navy has important bases in Kolkata and Goa.

Women were inducted into the Indian navy for the first time in 1992, when twenty-two women were trained for education, logistics, and law cadres. Service conditions are same for men and women officers.

Officer and Sailor cadres are the major lines of work in the Indian Navy. One has to serve Indian Navy for a minimum period of 15 years as general sailor Or 20 years as Artificer Or 20 years as Officer. After that, they are qualified for a generous pension. Those who join Navy at 20 years of age, could choose to retire from service with an assured monthly pay check for the rest of your life by the age of 35 to 40. And even after retirement, one could enjoy the canteen and medical facilities as you did while in service.

 

Officers

Indian Navy Officer : Introduction

An officer in the Navy at a very young age assumes the responsibility of commanding his men. They are provided with the highest level of exposure and can use of latest equipment on the ships, submarines and aircraft. For the talented and hardworking Officers, the opportunity is available to reach the very top i.e. they can rise to the rank of an Admiral. Even amongst sailors, the deserving can upgrade themselves as Commissioned Officers and rise as per their competence. 

The Indian Navy Officers are broadly classified as : 

  •  Executive
Executive Officers, who seeks for the command of a naval ship, submarines and aircraft, can specialise in any of the fields like 
- Gunnery & Missiles
- Navigation and Direction
- Anti-Submarine Warfare
- Communications
- Aviation (Pilot) : Most Navy Pilots fly ship-borne helicopters and shore based maritime reconnaissance aircraft, fighter aircraft such as Sea Harrier or Mig 29K etc. 
- Observer : Observer officer operates various state of the art equipment including sonics, sonars, radars and communication equipment.
- Submarine
- Hydrography : Hydrographic Officers are responsible for collecting information required for making the nautical charts used by the Indian Navy and other Navies around the world.
- Diving : Diving Officer job range from under water inspection and repair of ships to defence of Indian Navy maritime assets. Alternatively one may opt to become a Diving Cadre Officer wherein one would be required to undertake a Clearence Diving Officers course and/ or a marine Commando course. 
- Law : Law Officers deals with the legal needs of the Navy.
- Air Traffic Control
- Naval Armament Inspection : Naval Armament Inspection Officers ensure the quality, safety and reliability of naval armament supplied to the Navy by various agencies.
- Logistics
- Provost : Provost Officers deals with policing, regulatory, and security and vigilance needs of the Navy
  •   Engineering
Engineering Officers, who works in gigantic naval dockyards and indigenous production units, are responsible for keeping all the hi-tech machinery and propulsion systems of the navy serviceable.
One can join in the Naval Architecture Cadre of the Engineering Branch that involves in the designing, construction, quality controlling, repairing and new construction works of naval vessels. 
  •   Electrical
Electrical Officers are those who are in charge of managing and maintaining the ship's integral power generation and distribution system like propulsion, radar, radio, underwater weapons, missile, computer etc. 
  •  Education
Education Officers play a major role in the training of naval officers and sailors by giving scientific and methodical instructions, including theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all branches of the navy. An Education Officer can specialise in like Meteorology or Oceanography and in almost all specialisations of the Executive Branch

The basic training for all the officers inducted into the Indian Navy under various schemes are given at Naval Academy Ezhimala (NAVAC), located in Kannur (Cannanore) of Kerala.

Indian Navy Officer : Options & Educational Qualification

It is mandatory that all degrees and educational qualifications must be recognized by the competent authority in the field. The mark sheets of the candidates must be original or attested by appropriate authorities. No compromise/ relaxation will be made on this issue. All candidates desirous of joining the Indian Navy must be physically/ mentally fit as per laid down standards. Proficiency in sports, swimming and extra-curricular activities is desirable.

Women are granted Short Service Commission (SSC) in Naval Architecture, Law, Logistics, ATC, Aviation (Observer) and Education Branches of Indian Navy. The government has also given approval for Permanent Commission (PC) in Education, Law and Naval Architect branch on completion of SSC tenure depending upon merit and vacancy. No special status is conferred on women candidates.

Indian Navy Officer : Recruitment

Recruitment as an Officer in the Navy is carried out on the basis of All India Merit and are advertised through the Employment News and all important National and Regional news papers/dailies. The Commission in the Indian Navy is open to young men and women of the country. They have the option to join the Executive, Technical and Education Branches of the Indian Navy. 

There are two modes of induction in the Indian Navy viz. UPSC Entry and Non UPSC Entry

1. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Entries

UPSC holds a competitive examination for the entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA)/ Naval Academy (10+2) and Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE), twice a year. The UPSC entries are Permanent Commission (PC) entries in which the UPSC conducts a written examination which is followed by an interview by the Service Selection Board (SSB). Result of qualified candidates is forwarded to UPSC for making the final merit. Medically fit candidates who are in the merit are appointed by ADG (Rtg) / IHQ of MoD (Navy).

Education qualification for UPSC entries are : 

  1. National Defence Academy (NDA) & Naval Academy Examination :
    Candidates who have completed 10+2 (PCM) Examination or in the 12th standard are eligible to appear in NDA examination. Successful candidates can join in the NDA or Naval Academy as Naval cadets.
  2. Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) : 
    Graduates in any discipline are eligible to appear in the Combined Defence Services Examination. The degree should be recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Successful candidates join the Naval Academy for the Naval Orientation Course (NOC).

2. Non UPSC Entries

The Non UPSC entries are both for Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC). The duration of the Short Service Commission is 10 years, extendable to 14 years. There is no written examination for the Non-UPSC entries. In this case the applications are invited and short listed at Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy) [IHQ of MoD (Navy)] on the basis of marks secured in the qualifying educational exams ie 10+2, Graduate or Post graduate. The short listed candidates are sent for SSB interviews. Thereafter, a merit list, comprising of qualified candidates, is prepared as per the availability of vacancies.

The non UPSC Entry schemes are :

10+2 (B Tech entry)

Under the scheme, candidates with 10 +2 (PCM) qualifications, after selection through the Services Selection Board, are sent to Naval Academy for the NOC. Thereafter, they undergo a four year Engineering course at INS Shivaji/ Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) for Naval Architecture. On successful completion of the course they are granted permanent commission in the Executive/ Marine/ Electrical/ Electronic Engineering/ Naval Architecture branch of Indian Navy.

University Entry Scheme (UES)

Final year engineering students are eligible for induction into the technical Branches/ Cadres of the navy. Naval selection teams from the IHQ of MoD (Navy) and Command Headquarters visit AICTE approved Engineering colleges across the country to shortlist the candidates. The short listed candidates, based on all India Merit, are called for interview at the Services Selection Board. The successful candidates, thereafter, are put through the medical tests. Final selection is based on all India merit on the basis of marks obtained in the SSB interviews.

Special Naval Architects Entry Scheme (SNAES)

Government has recently approved the induction of 45 Naval Architect officers into the Naval Architecture Cadre of the Engineering Branch of the Indian Navy, as Short Service Commission Officers, under a Special scheme of 'Special Naval Architects Entry Scheme' (SNAES). An empowered Naval team visits IIT Kharagpur, IIT Chennai, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and Andhra University, where B Tech (Naval Architecture) course is conducted, to select the candidates through campus interviews. The selected candidates undergo medical examination at the nearest Military Hospital and if found fit, are selected for training.

Interview & Selection

The SSB selection consist of a 5 days testing schedule that has 5 stages. The following documents should be presented while attending SSB interviews. 

  • Original Matric, BE/B Tech degree certificate/ mark sheet.
  • Ten passport size un-attested photographs.
  • One pair white PT shoes, two pairs each white socks, white shorts, white T-shirts and two pairs of formal trousers & shirts (any sober colour)
  • Copy of the telegram/ print out of the relevant webpage.
  • Risk certificate duly signed by parent/ guardian to state "candidate (name) attending SSB with parent's/ guardian's consent and at his own risk. Parent/guardian is not entitled to claim any compensation or relief from government for injury sustained during SSB interview"

Stage I (Day 1) - Stage I selection system includes 

  1. Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIRT).
  2. Picture Perception and Description Test (PDPT): 
    Picture is flashed for 30 Seconds. The candidate have to broadly note down seven basic parameters viz number of characters, age, sex, mood, action relating to past, present and future for each character in one minute.
  3. Discussion of the Picture - 30 Minutes. 
    In this phase batch is divided into different groups. Strength of group is around 15 candidates. Each candidate narrates his individual written story verbatim. Subsequently, in Part - II all the candidates have to come to discuss amongst themselves and achieve a common consensus about the characters and theme of the story. Once all candidates have undergone this stage the results for stage one testing are declared. Successful candidates are retained for stage - II testing and the balance are asked to leave after a short brief on general shortcomings.

Stage-II (Day -2) - In the IInd Stage, Psychological Tests are performed that includes : 

  1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
    12 Pictures including one blank are shown for 30 sec each. Candidates are asked to write a story around what led to the situation? What is going on and what would be the outcome? Picture is shown for 30 seconds and they are asked to write it in 4 minutes. In the blank slide, they have to think a picture of their own choice and to write a story around that.
  2. Word Association Test (WAT)
    In this test, a series of 60 words are shown to the candidates one after another for 15 seconds each. The candidate is required to write down the first thought or idea comes to his mind.
  3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
    This test consists of 60 routine life situations regarding day to day activities. The situations are printed in a booklet and the candidate is asked to write his reactions by completing the sentences, as to how they would feel, think and act up these situations.
  4. Self Description-15 Mins.
    Candidate is asked to write five separate paragraphs on each context about the opinion of his parents/guardian, friends, teachers/ superiors.

Stage III (Day 3) - Stage III selection process includes : 

  1. Group Discussion
    Two topics of common interest (social issues and current events) are discussed. It is an informal discussion and not a debate. Each topic is allotted 20 minutes each. No definite conclusion is required to be deduced.
  2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
    It comprises of five stages viz, explanation of the model, reading of the narrative by GTO, five minutes for self reading by candidates, 10 minutes for individual written solutions and 20 minutes for group discussion. Narration of the group solution and definite conclusion is required.
  3. Progressive Group Tasks (PGT)
    It is the first outdoor task. A set of four obstacles with progressively increasing level of difficulties are to be completed in 40 to 50 minutes. Structures, helping material and load are provided to the group.
  4. Group Obstacle Race (GOR)
    In this task the group is pitched against each other over a set of six obstacles with a snake like load to carry.
  5. Half Group Task (HGT)
    It has one obstacle similar to progressive group task with helping material and load to be carried. Group is divided into two Sub Groups and assigned the same obstacle in turn in such a way that when one group is working, the other is not allowed to watch it. Time allotted to each sub group is 15 minutes.
  6. Lecturette
    It is an individual task and the candidate is required to give a short talk to the group. Three minutes are allowed to prepare any chosen topic from the four given in the Lecturette Cards for the talk.

Stage IV (Day 4) - Stage IV selection process includes : 

  1. Individual Obstacles
    A Set of 10 obstacles is set to be tackled individually. Obstacles are numbered from one to ten, denoting the points each one carries. Each individual will be given three minutes.
  2. Command Task
    Each individual is nominated as commander for one task consisting of one obstacle similar to the Progressive Group Task Time given is 15 minutes.
  3. Final Group Task
    Task consisting of one obstacle similar to the progressive group task. Time given to complete this task is 15-20 minutes.

Personal interviews are conducted by Interviewing Officer (IO) from Day 2 to Day 4

Stage V (Day 5) - Stage V includes : 

  1. Closing address by Deputy President of the Board
  2. Conference
  3. Announcement of results
  4. Dispersal

The candidates recommended by Service Selection Board (SSB) has to undergo a medical examination at nearest Service Hospitals. The medical examination procedure for candidates is as follow : 

  •  Special Medical Board (SMB)
Special Medical Board (SMB) of officer candidates will be held at designated hospitals over duration of five to six days. Candidates will be declared Fit/ Temporary Unfit or Permanent Unfit. Candidates declared Temporary Unfit are to report back to the hospital for examination after the specified time. Candidates who still do not qualify will be declared Permanent Unfit.
  •  Appeal Medical Board (AMB)
Candidates who are declared Permanent Unfit by Special Medical Board are eligible for Appeal Medical Board after depositing a sum of a requisite amount in the Government Treasury. No fees will be charged from Temporarily Unfit candidates. Unfit candidates get a maximum of 42 days to report for AMB at designated Command Hospital. Candidates declared unfit by Appeal Medical Board are eligible to appeal for Review Medical Board. 
  •  Review Medical Board (RMB)
The President of Appeal Medical Board will intimate the candidate, the reason of his/ her unfitness through a leaflet and guide him / her for Review Medical Board. However, he will explain to the candidate that holding of the Review Medical Board is at the discretion of DGMS(Navy) and DGAFMS based on the merits of the case and it is not his/her right. RMBs are conducted at Army Research & Referral Hospital Delhi and Armed Force Medical College Pune.

The selected Officer candidates, inducted into the Indian Navy under various schemes are given basic training at Naval Academy Ezhimala (NAVAC). The period of initial training for cadet entry and direct entry graduate candidates is 4 years and 22 weeks respectively. Branch specific training is subsequently imparted at other naval establishments.

Indian Navy Officer : Medical Standards

All candidates desirous of joining the Indian Navy must be physically and medically fit, as per laid down standards. Proficiency in sport, swimming and extra-curricular activities is desirable. 

Height - The preferable height for a candidate of 18 years of age is 157 cm for males and 152 cm for females.

Weight - Table showing correlation between age, height and weight are given below for Male and Female candidates respectively. This is to be used as a guide making allowance for build as necessary. The criteria for selection should be general build of the body and proportionate development rather than rigid, adherence to the above standards. Overweight and Underweight individuals who are otherwise fit in every respect may be accepted at the discretion of the Recruiting Medical Officer / Medical Board. The weight should not however vary from the average by more than 10%.

Sailors

Sailors are the sepoys of the Indian Navy who are responsible for operating and maintaining propulsion machinery, weapons, sensors etc. Sailors in the Navy are imparted with requisite training at various intervals during their service. They are liable to serve anywhere in India, on board ships and Submarines or abroad as deemed necessary by the service. 

The initial basic training for the sailors are given at INS Chilka, located at Khurda District of Orissa. This is followed by further training at various Naval Establishments all over the country. Prior to release from service sailors are also given pre-release courses to enable them to settle down in civil life. 

The Branch and trade structure allotted to sailors are :

  •  Executive
As a sailor of the executive branch, one will be involved with operating the state-of-art weapons, navigational systems, communication sets, diving equipment etc. Duties of the sailors from the executive branch include a thorough training in the art of seamanship operating weapon and sensors, look-out duties and boat work. Besides these general duties they can obtain qualification in any one of the disciplines of Gunnery & Missiles, Antisubmarine warfare, Navigation and Direction, Diving, Survey, Physical Trainer, Regulating, Logistics and Communication.
  •  Electrical 
As an electrical sailor, one have the responsibility of upkeep and maintenance of all electrical, electronics and weapons equipment of the Navy. Their job onboard ships and submarines is good as supplying and maintaining power to mini township.
  •  Engineering
The sailor of Engineering branch are technicians and highly trained mechanics who pride themselves on keeping propulsion & auxiliary system running smoothly be it the engines, the weapon system, the aircraft or the machinery systems. Sailors of this branch is also trained in Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Warfare & Damage Control including fire fighting. 
  •  Aviation
Aviation branch comprises of specialist sailors who are trained to maintain and handle different type of aircraft operating in the Navy- whether onboard ship or ashore. 
  •  Submarine
Those who have exclusive challenge of operating below the surface of the oceans in the highly technical, powerful submarines can join as sailors of Submarine branch . Submarine sailors are taken from various branches subject to their volunteering and clearing the aptitude test and the Submarine and Aviation medical standards.

Indian Navy Sailor : Various Options & Eligibility

•  Artificer Apprentices (AA)
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed Class 12th or equivalent with subjects of Physics, Chemistry  and Mathematics with 55% marks
Age : 17-20 years
Training : The training for Artificer Apprentice will generally be for 09 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 08 weeks sea training . Thereafter four years training in technical training establishments of the Navy. On completion, candidates will have qualification equivalent to Diploma in Electrical/ Mechanical/ Aeronautical Engineering which is recognised by the Govt of India for purposes of employment in Central /State Govt.
The beginning of engagement of sailor with the Indian Navy is subject to successful completion of training. The period of the initial engagement of Artificer Apprentice sailor is 20 years. However, engagement (ie service) period is extendable with maximum limit being till the attainment of 57 yrs of age, which, in turn, depends on the rank attained and satisfactory performance by the sailor while in the service.

  •  Senior Secondary Recruit
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed Class 12th(Intermediate) with Science stream with compulsory subjects of Physics and Mathematics and Optional subjects of Chemistry or Biology or Computers.
Age : 17-21 years
Training : The training for Senior Secondary Recruit will generally be 24 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 24 weeks professional training in the allotted trade in Naval Establishments all over the country. Branch/ Trade will be allocated as per requirement of service. 
The beginning of engagement of sailor with the Indian Navy is subject to successful completion of training. The period of the initial engagement for Senior Secondary Recruit sailor is 15 years. However, engagement (ie service) period is extendable with maximum limit being till the attainment of 57 yrs of age, which, in turn, depends on the rank attained and satisfactory performance by the sailor while in the service.

  •  Matric Entry Recruits (MR)
Steward and Cooks are the two branches recruited through Matric Entry 
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed 10th class examination.     
Age : 17-21 years

  •  Non Matric Entry Recruits (NMR)
Topass are recruited through Non Matric Entry
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed 6th class examination.
Age : 17-21 years

Training : The training for Matric Recruit and Non Matric Recruit will generally be 15 weeks basic training at INS Chilka followed by professional training at respective Naval establishments as per trade.

  •  Musician (MUS)
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed 10th class examination and should be able to exhibit an aptitude for music. 
Musical Ability : The candidates applying should have proficiency in western notation, aural aptitude, knowledge of Theory of Music and actual practical skill on any Musical Instrument. The candidates applying should have proficiency in playing String, Key-board, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Instruments both of Western and Indian Origin. 
Age : 17-21 years

 

Indian Navy Sailor : Recruitment Process

Recruitment of sailors in Indian Navy is application based and is carried out on the All India Merit on the basis of a Written Examination, Physical Fitness Test and Medical Examination.  Recruitment publicity is carried out on all India basis through advertisements in all leading National & Regional newspapers and Employment News in December / January and June/ July every year. Publicity material is also dispatched to a large number of schools / colleges and all Zilla Sainik Boards. The local administration carries out the publicity drive in rural / backward areas through local media. 

How to Apply : 
The application form in the prescribed format may be typed on plain paper or downloaded from the website of Indian Navy. The forms will be published in important Newspapers. Candidates applying for more than one type of entry are required to submit separate applications. However, only one application form is to be filled for a particular entry. Choice of entry is to be clearly indicated on the application form. You can apply only for one entry between MR Cook / MR Steward/ NMR Topass in a batch. All applications for AA and SSR, MR, MUS, NMR are to be addressed to the authority promulgated and should reach the authority only through ordinary post.

The following documents should attached with the application :

  • Application is to be filled in capital letters with one recent Passport size photograph pasted at the top right corner and one spare recent Passport size photos with the candidate's name written on the reverse attached along with the form (In the absence of recent photograph candidate will not be allowed to appear in the examination)
  • Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of the following certificates:}
    (i) Matric /equivalent certificate for verification of date of birth.
    (ii) Mark sheet and certificate of Diploma/Higher Board examination/ Matriculation as applicable
    (iii) Domicile certificate
  • Two self addressed envelopes of size 22 x 10 cms with Rs 10/- stamp affixed on one envelope and one envelope without stamp is to be submitted alongwith the application form.(White colour envelop for AA entry and brown colour for SSR/MR/NMR entry). On top of the envelope containing the application the Type of Entry, name of District, Percentage in exam and name of Exam passed is to be clearly written 

Indian Navy conducts recruitment for enrolling sailor recruits at 34 examination centres across the country. Candidates are permitted to appear for examination at one centre for recruitment in accordance with the domicile certificate issued by the District level Government authorities.

Call-Up letters, indicating date, time and place for examination as scheduled are sent to the eligible shortlisted candidates.

AA/ SSR/ MR/ NMR

Written Exam
Written exam will be conducted at the designated centre on the promulgated date and time. The objective type 60 minutes duration question paper will be bilingual (Hindi & English) and comprise of four sections i.e. English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge.

The Non Matric entry question paper will of 40 minutes duration and it comprise two sections i.e. Mathematics and General Knowledge.

The candidates are required to pass in all sections and in aggregate.

Physical Fitness Tests (PFT) 
Candidates who qualify the written test are permitted to undergo PFT which consist of 1.6 Km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 25 squat ups (Uthak Baithak) and 10 Push-ups. Candidates undergoing PFT will do so at their own risk. Those who qualify PFT, are taken for Medical Examination.

Medical Test
Entry level Medical standards are different for different entries. Medical examination will be conducted by authorised military doctors as per medical standard prescribed in current regulations applicable to sailors on entry. Candidates declared temporary unfit during medical examination can avail specialist review from the specified Military hospital within a maximum period of 21 days. Those who declared permanent unfit can appeal for specialist opinion in a Military Hospital on payment of a requisite amount by Military Receivable Order (MRO) in the Government Treasury within 21 days. Medical fitness certificate from other than that of the specialist opinion in the designated Military Hospital will NOT be considered. 

All the selected candidates, prior to enrolment, have to undergo a  Final Enrolment Medical examination at INS Chilka (Orissa). 

Musicians

The Director of Music (DOM) at INS Kunjali will be responsible for conduct of recruitment for Musician sailors as per schedule promulgated by IHQ MOD (Navy). All applications for MR (Musician) entry has to be addressed to The Commanding Officer, (for Director of Music), INS Kunjali, Colaba, Mumbai - 400 005. 

Application procedure and selection procedure for MR (Musician) entry is same as that of AA/ SSR/ MR/ NMR entry. 

The preliminary screening and Medical examination would be carried out at following Naval Recruitment Establishments (NREs) by a team nominated by DOM.

Indian Navy Sailor : Medical Standards

The candidate should be physically and medically fit for enrolment into Indian Navy. Candidate should possess good mental and physical health, should be free from any disease / disability and have no cardio vascular disease, surgical deformities like Knock-Knees, Flat-Foot. Candidate should not have a past history of fits or psychiatric ailments Vericose-vein etc. He should not have any type of infection in the ears. Medical examination will be conducted by authorized Military Doctors as per medical standard prescribed under current regulations applicable to the sailors of Indian Navy on entry. 

Visual Standard : 
Candidate should possess Colour perception standard of CP II and Eyes Visual standards should meet the under mentioned prescribed standards for both the conditions that is with glasses and without glasses.

Pay Scale :

All the sailors have been divided into two group viz 'X' and 'Y'. Artificer Apprentices fall under 'X' group and rest of the sailors in group 'Y'.

All recruits shall receive a stipend during their training period at the rate of Rs. 5700 per month. On successful completion of training Grade Pay, Military Service Pay, Group 'X' pay (if applicable), Dearness Allowance and allowances of the trade to which they stand allotted less the stipend already paid. The rate of stipend will be increased by 50% every time the DA payable on revised pay band goes up by 50%.

Career Options in Indian Navy : Medical Officers

The Armed Forces Medical Services is amongst one of the best options available to a medical graduate in our country. As an officer in the Army Medical Corps, a candidate is liable to be employed in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force in any part of the country or world. The Armed Forces offer a prestigious and professionally satisfying career for doctors as commissioned officers with high status associated with Group A gazetted posts of Central Government. 

The medical services in the Navy are delivered through a network of hospitals spread throughout the length and breadth of the country. As a doctor in the Navy, one can have an opportunity to learn and practice military medicine and look after the health of the men in uniform and their families both in peace and war. There are ample avenues to specialize in basic specialities and super specialities fields like Physiotherapy, Advance Nursing, Radiography, Lab Assistant, Dental Operation Room Assistant and Blood Transfusion etc. 

Most of the postgraduate courses are conducted at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune and various other teaching hospitals of the Armed Forces. However the service also offers opportunities to avail study leave at Government expense for the super-speciality courses at reputed civil institutions in India and abroad.

Selection Procedure

Recruitment to the medical posts are through Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC). 

50% graduate passing out from the Armed Forces Medical College Pune are taken directly into Permanent Commission and the rest are offered Short Service Commission. Doctors from civil medical colleges are offered only SSC entry. SSC officers are required to serve for a minimum period of 5 years. The SSC may be extended by another two terms of 5 years and then 4 years upto a maximum of 14 years. AFMC graduates offered SSC are required to serve for a minimum period of 7 years extendable by another 7 years.

Short Service Commission

Notification for the post of doctors (male and female) in Indian Navy through SSC are published in leading newspapers twice a year. Eligible candidates are called for interview at New Delhi to assess their merit and suitability for grant of Short Service Commission in the Army Medical Corps and subsequent secondment to the Navy. Based on the results of the interview, candidates who have been short listed are subjected to medical examination at designated Armed Forces hospitals in New Delhi. Medically fit candidates are granted commission subject to verification procedures as deemed necessary and required for commissioning.

Permanent Commission

SSC officers are allowed three chances to appear in departmental interviews for grant of Permanent Commision at any time after completion of two years SSC service ie two chances in first tenure of five years and one chance in second tenure of five years but before completion of nine years and six months of service. Also, there should be no break in service and they should fulfill the conditions of eligibility laid down. The age limit for granting PC for different professional educational qualification are :

Pay and allowances and terms and conditions of service, except the duration of service and provision of retirement benefits are broadly similar for both types of commission.

The rank granted on first appointment in the AMC are : 

  •  Captain/ Surgeon Lieutenant/ Flight Lieutenant - Applicable to doctors commissioned from civil who have acquired their Permanent Medical Registration Certificate.
  •  Lieutenant/ Surgeon Sub Lieutenant/ Flying Officer - Applicable to Medical cadets passing out from AFMC Pune, till completion of their internship in Service hospitals.

Promotion till the rank of Lieutenant Colonel/ Surgeon Commander/ Wing Commander is by time subject to satisfactory service and fitness for the higher rank. Further promotion to higher ranks is by selection based on vacancies. If an officer does not get promoted to the rank of Colonel/ Surgeon Captain/ Group Captain by selection grade, then he/she is granted time scale promotion to the rank of Colonel/ Surgeon Captain/ Group Captain (Time Scale) on completion of 24 years of reckonable commissioned service.

Indian Navy

Indian Navy (IN) alias Bharatiya Nau Sena is the Naval branch of the armed forces of India whose history can be traced back to 1612. It is the world's fifth largest and reliable three dimensional force, capable of operating above, on and under surfaces of the oceans. Navy is responsible for the Defence and security of India's maritime interests. A fleet of submarines, destroyers, freights and other support vessels operate under the Indian Navy.

The glorious and challenging career in Indian navy is entirely different from other professions. Besides giving an opportunity for the youngsters to display their leadership skills, this career bestows one with a tremendous amount of responsibility. It is a profession which gives a highest level of security and comfort that is almost unheard of in civilian life together with the chance to travel widely, meet new people and to enjoy warmth and amity. A career in Indian Navy offers immense facilities, a privileged lifestyle, a unique way of exploring ones life and of course, honour in serving the country.  

Earlier, Indian Navy was known as 'Honourable East India Company's Marine' and by 1686 the name of this force was changed to Bombay Marine, as the British commerce having shifted predominantly to Bombay. Later the force had varied names like Her Majesty's Indian Navy (in 1830), Her Majesty's Indian Marine (during 1863 to 1877) and Royal Indian Marine (in 1892). In 1934, the Royal Indian Marine was re-organised into the Royal Indian Navy and the prefix 'Royal' was dropped on 26 January 1950 with India being constituted as a Republic.

The highest post in the Indian Navy is the position of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). CNS exercises operational and administrative control of the Indian Navy from Integrated Headquarters of MOD (Navy). He is assisted by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, namely the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and the Chief of Material (COM).

The Indian Navy operates three commands, each under the control of a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief in the rank of Vice Admiral. The three Commands are: 

  • The Western Naval Command (Headquarters at Mumbai).
  • The Eastern Naval Command (Head quarters at Visakhapatnam)
  • The Southern Naval Command (Headquarters at Kochi)

The Western and the Eastern Naval Command are operational commands and exercise control over operations in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal respectively. The Southern Command is designed as the Training Command, operating on the Arabian Sea. Besides these, the navy has important bases in Kolkata and Goa.

Women were inducted into the Indian navy for the first time in 1992, when twenty-two women were trained for education, logistics, and law cadres. Service conditions are same for men and women officers.

Officers

Indian Navy Officer : Introduction

An officer in the Navy at a very young age assumes the responsibility of commanding his men. They are provided with the highest level of exposure and can use of latest equipment on the ships, submarines and aircraft. For the talented and hardworking Officers, the opportunity is available to reach the very top i.e. they can rise to the rank of an Admiral. Even amongst sailors, the deserving can upgrade themselves as Commissioned Officers and rise as per their competence. 

The Indian Navy Officers are broadly classified as : 

  •  Executive
Executive Officers, who seeks for the command of a naval ship, submarines and aircraft, can specialise in any of the fields like 
- Gunnery & Missiles
- Navigation and Direction
- Anti-Submarine Warfare
- Communications
- Aviation (Pilot) : Most Navy Pilots fly ship-borne helicopters and shore based maritime reconnaissance aircraft, fighter aircraft such as Sea Harrier or Mig 29K etc. 
- Observer : Observer officer operates various state of the art equipment including sonics, sonars, radars and communication equipment.
- Submarine
- Hydrography : Hydrographic Officers are responsible for collecting information required for making the nautical charts used by the Indian Navy and other Navies around the world.
- Diving : Diving Officer job range from under water inspection and repair of ships to defence of Indian Navy maritime assets. Alternatively one may opt to become a Diving Cadre Officer wherein one would be required to undertake a Clearence Diving Officers course and/ or a marine Commando course. 
- Law : Law Officers deals with the legal needs of the Navy.
- Air Traffic Control
- Naval Armament Inspection : Naval Armament Inspection Officers ensure the quality, safety and reliability of naval armament supplied to the Navy by various agencies.
- Logistics
- Provost : Provost Officers deals with policing, regulatory, and security and vigilance needs of the Navy
  •   Engineering
Engineering Officers, who works in gigantic naval dockyards and indigenous production units, are responsible for keeping all the hi-tech machinery and propulsion systems of the navy serviceable.
One can join in the Naval Architecture Cadre of the Engineering Branch that involves in the designing, construction, quality controlling, repairing and new construction works of naval vessels. 
  •   Electrical
Electrical Officers are those who are in charge of managing and maintaining the ship's integral power generation and distribution system like propulsion, radar, radio, underwater weapons, missile, computer etc. 
  •  Education
Education Officers play a major role in the training of naval officers and sailors by giving scientific and methodical instructions, including theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all branches of the navy. An Education Officer can specialise in like Meteorology or Oceanography and in almost all specialisations of the Executive Branch

The basic training for all the officers inducted into the Indian Navy under various schemes are given at Naval Academy Ezhimala (NAVAC), located in Kannur (Cannanore) of Kerala.

Indian Navy Officer : Options & Educational Qualification

It is mandatory that all degrees and educational qualifications must be recognized by the competent authority in the field. The mark sheets of the candidates must be original or attested by appropriate authorities. No compromise/ relaxation will be made on this issue. All candidates desirous of joining the Indian Navy must be physically/ mentally fit as per laid down standards. Proficiency in sports, swimming and extra-curricular activities is desirable.

Women are granted Short Service Commission (SSC) in Naval Architecture, Law, Logistics, ATC, Aviation (Observer) and Education Branches of Indian Navy. The government has also given approval for Permanent Commission (PC) in Education, Law and Naval Architect branch on completion of SSC tenure depending upon merit and vacancy. No special status is conferred on women candidates.

Indian Navy Officer : Recruitment

Recruitment as an Officer in the Navy is carried out on the basis of All India Merit and are advertised through the Employment News and all important National and Regional news papers/dailies. The Commission in the Indian Navy is open to young men and women of the country. They have the option to join the Executive, Technical and Education Branches of the Indian Navy. 

There are two modes of induction in the Indian Navy viz. UPSC Entry and Non UPSC Entry

1. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Entries

UPSC holds a competitive examination for the entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA)/ Naval Academy (10+2) and Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE), twice a year. The UPSC entries are Permanent Commission (PC) entries in which the UPSC conducts a written examination which is followed by an interview by the Service Selection Board (SSB). Result of qualified candidates is forwarded to UPSC for making the final merit. Medically fit candidates who are in the merit are appointed by ADG (Rtg) / IHQ of MoD (Navy).

Education qualification for UPSC entries are : 

  1. National Defence Academy (NDA) & Naval Academy Examination :
    Candidates who have completed 10+2 (PCM) Examination or in the 12th standard are eligible to appear in NDA examination. Successful candidates can join in the NDA or Naval Academy as Naval cadets.
  2. Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) : 
    Graduates in any discipline are eligible to appear in the Combined Defence Services Examination. The degree should be recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Successful candidates join the Naval Academy for the Naval Orientation Course (NOC).

2. Non UPSC Entries

The Non UPSC entries are both for Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC). The duration of the Short Service Commission is 10 years, extendable to 14 years. There is no written examination for the Non-UPSC entries. In this case the applications are invited and short listed at Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy) [IHQ of MoD (Navy)] on the basis of marks secured in the qualifying educational exams ie 10+2, Graduate or Post graduate. The short listed candidates are sent for SSB interviews. Thereafter, a merit list, comprising of qualified candidates, is prepared as per the availability of vacancies.

The non UPSC Entry schemes are :

10+2 (B Tech entry)

Under the scheme, candidates with 10 +2 (PCM) qualifications, after selection through the Services Selection Board, are sent to Naval Academy for the NOC. Thereafter, they undergo a four year Engineering course at INS Shivaji/ Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) for Naval Architecture. On successful completion of the course they are granted permanent commission in the Executive/ Marine/ Electrical/ Electronic Engineering/ Naval Architecture branch of Indian Navy.

University Entry Scheme (UES)

Final year engineering students are eligible for induction into the technical Branches/ Cadres of the navy. Naval selection teams from the IHQ of MoD (Navy) and Command Headquarters visit AICTE approved Engineering colleges across the country to shortlist the candidates. The short listed candidates, based on all India Merit, are called for interview at the Services Selection Board. The successful candidates, thereafter, are put through the medical tests. Final selection is based on all India merit on the basis of marks obtained in the SSB interviews.

Special Naval Architects Entry Scheme (SNAES)

Government has recently approved the induction of 45 Naval Architect officers into the Naval Architecture Cadre of the Engineering Branch of the Indian Navy, as Short Service Commission Officers, under a Special scheme of 'Special Naval Architects Entry Scheme' (SNAES). An empowered Naval team visits IIT Kharagpur, IIT Chennai, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and Andhra University, where B Tech (Naval Architecture) course is conducted, to select the candidates through campus interviews. The selected candidates undergo medical examination at the nearest Military Hospital and if found fit, are selected for training.

Interview & Selection

The SSB selection consist of a 5 days testing schedule that has 5 stages. The following documents should be presented while attending SSB interviews. 

  • Original Matric, BE/B Tech degree certificate/ mark sheet.
  • Ten passport size un-attested photographs.
  • One pair white PT shoes, two pairs each white socks, white shorts, white T-shirts and two pairs of formal trousers & shirts (any sober colour)
  • Copy of the telegram/ print out of the relevant webpage.
  • Risk certificate duly signed by parent/ guardian to state "candidate (name) attending SSB with parent's/ guardian's consent and at his own risk. Parent/guardian is not entitled to claim any compensation or relief from government for injury sustained during SSB interview"

Stage I (Day 1) - Stage I selection system includes 

  1. Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIRT).
  2. Picture Perception and Description Test (PDPT): 
    Picture is flashed for 30 Seconds. The candidate have to broadly note down seven basic parameters viz number of characters, age, sex, mood, action relating to past, present and future for each character in one minute.
  3. Discussion of the Picture - 30 Minutes. 
    In this phase batch is divided into different groups. Strength of group is around 15 candidates. Each candidate narrates his individual written story verbatim. Subsequently, in Part - II all the candidates have to come to discuss amongst themselves and achieve a common consensus about the characters and theme of the story. Once all candidates have undergone this stage the results for stage one testing are declared. Successful candidates are retained for stage - II testing and the balance are asked to leave after a short brief on general shortcomings.

Stage-II (Day -2) - In the IInd Stage, Psychological Tests are performed that includes : 

  1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
    12 Pictures including one blank are shown for 30 sec each. Candidates are asked to write a story around what led to the situation? What is going on and what would be the outcome? Picture is shown for 30 seconds and they are asked to write it in 4 minutes. In the blank slide, they have to think a picture of their own choice and to write a story around that.
  2. Word Association Test (WAT)
    In this test, a series of 60 words are shown to the candidates one after another for 15 seconds each. The candidate is required to write down the first thought or idea comes to his mind.
  3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
    This test consists of 60 routine life situations regarding day to day activities. The situations are printed in a booklet and the candidate is asked to write his reactions by completing the sentences, as to how they would feel, think and act up these situations.
  4. Self Description-15 Mins.
    Candidate is asked to write five separate paragraphs on each context about the opinion of his parents/guardian, friends, teachers/ superiors.

Stage III (Day 3) - Stage III selection process includes : 

  1. Group Discussion
    Two topics of common interest (social issues and current events) are discussed. It is an informal discussion and not a debate. Each topic is allotted 20 minutes each. No definite conclusion is required to be deduced.
  2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
    It comprises of five stages viz, explanation of the model, reading of the narrative by GTO, five minutes for self reading by candidates, 10 minutes for individual written solutions and 20 minutes for group discussion. Narration of the group solution and definite conclusion is required.
  3. Progressive Group Tasks (PGT)
    It is the first outdoor task. A set of four obstacles with progressively increasing level of difficulties are to be completed in 40 to 50 minutes. Structures, helping material and load are provided to the group.
  4. Group Obstacle Race (GOR)
    In this task the group is pitched against each other over a set of six obstacles with a snake like load to carry.
  5. Half Group Task (HGT)
    It has one obstacle similar to progressive group task with helping material and load to be carried. Group is divided into two Sub Groups and assigned the same obstacle in turn in such a way that when one group is working, the other is not allowed to watch it. Time allotted to each sub group is 15 minutes.
  6. Lecturette
    It is an individual task and the candidate is required to give a short talk to the group. Three minutes are allowed to prepare any chosen topic from the four given in the Lecturette Cards for the talk.

Stage IV (Day 4) - Stage IV selection process includes : 

  1. Individual Obstacles
    A Set of 10 obstacles is set to be tackled individually. Obstacles are numbered from one to ten, denoting the points each one carries. Each individual will be given three minutes.
  2. Command Task
    Each individual is nominated as commander for one task consisting of one obstacle similar to the Progressive Group Task Time given is 15 minutes.
  3. Final Group Task
    Task consisting of one obstacle similar to the progressive group task. Time given to complete this task is 15-20 minutes.

Personal interviews are conducted by Interviewing Officer (IO) from Day 2 to Day 4

Stage V (Day 5) - Stage V includes : 

  1. Closing address by Deputy President of the Board
  2. Conference
  3. Announcement of results
  4. Dispersal

The candidates recommended by Service Selection Board (SSB) has to undergo a medical examination at nearest Service Hospitals. The medical examination procedure for candidates is as follow : 

  •  Special Medical Board (SMB)
Special Medical Board (SMB) of officer candidates will be held at designated hospitals over duration of five to six days. Candidates will be declared Fit/ Temporary Unfit or Permanent Unfit. Candidates declared Temporary Unfit are to report back to the hospital for examination after the specified time. Candidates who still do not qualify will be declared Permanent Unfit.
  •  Appeal Medical Board (AMB)
Candidates who are declared Permanent Unfit by Special Medical Board are eligible for Appeal Medical Board after depositing a sum of a requisite amount in the Government Treasury. No fees will be charged from Temporarily Unfit candidates. Unfit candidates get a maximum of 42 days to report for AMB at designated Command Hospital. Candidates declared unfit by Appeal Medical Board are eligible to appeal for Review Medical Board. 
  •  Review Medical Board (RMB)
The President of Appeal Medical Board will intimate the candidate, the reason of his/ her unfitness through a leaflet and guide him / her for Review Medical Board. However, he will explain to the candidate that holding of the Review Medical Board is at the discretion of DGMS(Navy) and DGAFMS based on the merits of the case and it is not his/her right. RMBs are conducted at Army Research & Referral Hospital Delhi and Armed Force Medical College Pune.

The selected Officer candidates, inducted into the Indian Navy under various schemes are given basic training at Naval Academy Ezhimala (NAVAC). The period of initial training for cadet entry and direct entry graduate candidates is 4 years and 22 weeks respectively. Branch specific training is subsequently imparted at other naval establishments.

Indian Navy Officer : Medical Standards

All candidates desirous of joining the Indian Navy must be physically and medically fit, as per laid down standards. Proficiency in sport, swimming and extra-curricular activities is desirable. 

Height - The preferable height for a candidate of 18 years of age is 157 cm for males and 152 cm for females.

Weight - Table showing correlation between age, height and weight are given below for Male and Female candidates respectively. This is to be used as a guide making allowance for build as necessary. The criteria for selection should be general build of the body and proportionate development rather than rigid, adherence to the above standards. Overweight and Underweight individuals who are otherwise fit in every respect may be accepted at the discretion of the Recruiting Medical Officer / Medical Board. The weight should not however vary from the average by more than 10%.

The promotion till the rank of a Commander is on a time scale basics. The promotion to further higher ranks is based on selection. All promotions are subject to your clearing the required qualification course /exams on time and meet the sea service, physical and medical requirement for your branch.

 

Sailors

Sailors are the sepoys of the Indian Navy who are responsible for operating and maintaining propulsion machinery, weapons, sensors etc. Sailors in the Navy are imparted with requisite training at various intervals during their service. They are liable to serve anywhere in India, on board ships and Submarines or abroad as deemed necessary by the service. 

The initial basic training for the sailors are given at INS Chilka, located at Khurda District of Orissa. This is followed by further training at various Naval Establishments all over the country. Prior to release from service sailors are also given pre-release courses to enable them to settle down in civil life. 

The Branch and trade structure allotted to sailors are :

  •  Executive
As a sailor of the executive branch, one will be involved with operating the state-of-art weapons, navigational systems, communication sets, diving equipment etc. Duties of the sailors from the executive branch include a thorough training in the art of seamanship operating weapon and sensors, look-out duties and boat work. Besides these general duties they can obtain qualification in any one of the disciplines of Gunnery & Missiles, Antisubmarine warfare, Navigation and Direction, Diving, Survey, Physical Trainer, Regulating, Logistics and Communication.
  •  Electrical 
As an electrical sailor, one have the responsibility of upkeep and maintenance of all electrical, electronics and weapons equipment of the Navy. Their job onboard ships and submarines is good as supplying and maintaining power to mini township.
  •  Engineering
The sailor of Engineering branch are technicians and highly trained mechanics who pride themselves on keeping propulsion & auxiliary system running smoothly be it the engines, the weapon system, the aircraft or the machinery systems. Sailors of this branch is also trained in Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Warfare & Damage Control including fire fighting. 
  •  Aviation
Aviation branch comprises of specialist sailors who are trained to maintain and handle different type of aircraft operating in the Navy- whether onboard ship or ashore. 
  •  Submarine
Those who have exclusive challenge of operating below the surface of the oceans in the highly technical, powerful submarines can join as sailors of Submarine branch . Submarine sailors are taken from various branches subject to their volunteering and clearing the aptitude test and the Submarine and Aviation medical standards.

Indian Navy Sailor : Various Options & Eligibility

•  Artificer Apprentices (AA)
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed Class 12th or equivalent with subjects of Physics, Chemistry  and Mathematics with 55% marks
Age : 17-20 years
Training : The training for Artificer Apprentice will generally be for 09 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 08 weeks sea training . Thereafter four years training in technical training establishments of the Navy. On completion, candidates will have qualification equivalent to Diploma in Electrical/ Mechanical/ Aeronautical Engineering which is recognised by the Govt of India for purposes of employment in Central /State Govt.
The beginning of engagement of sailor with the Indian Navy is subject to successful completion of training. The period of the initial engagement of Artificer Apprentice sailor is 20 years. However, engagement (ie service) period is extendable with maximum limit being till the attainment of 57 yrs of age, which, in turn, depends on the rank attained and satisfactory performance by the sailor while in the service.

  •  Senior Secondary Recruit
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed Class 12th(Intermediate) with Science stream with compulsory subjects of Physics and Mathematics and Optional subjects of Chemistry or Biology or Computers.
Age : 17-21 years
Training : The training for Senior Secondary Recruit will generally be 24 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 24 weeks professional training in the allotted trade in Naval Establishments all over the country. Branch/ Trade will be allocated as per requirement of service. 
The beginning of engagement of sailor with the Indian Navy is subject to successful completion of training. The period of the initial engagement for Senior Secondary Recruit sailor is 15 years. However, engagement (ie service) period is extendable with maximum limit being till the attainment of 57 yrs of age, which, in turn, depends on the rank attained and satisfactory performance by the sailor while in the service.

  •  Matric Entry Recruits (MR)
Steward and Cooks are the two branches recruited through Matric Entry 
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed 10th class examination.     
Age : 17-21 years

  •  Non Matric Entry Recruits (NMR)
Topass are recruited through Non Matric Entry
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed 6th class examination.
Age : 17-21 years

Training : The training for Matric Recruit and Non Matric Recruit will generally be 15 weeks basic training at INS Chilka followed by professional training at respective Naval establishments as per trade.

  •  Musician (MUS)
Educational Qualification :Applicant should have passed 10th class examination and should be able to exhibit an aptitude for music. 
Musical Ability : The candidates applying should have proficiency in western notation, aural aptitude, knowledge of Theory of Music and actual practical skill on any Musical Instrument. The candidates applying should have proficiency in playing String, Key-board, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Instruments both of Western and Indian Origin. 
Age : 17-21 years

 

Indian Navy Sailor : Recruitment Process

Recruitment of sailors in Indian Navy is application based and is carried out on the All India Merit on the basis of a Written Examination, Physical Fitness Test and Medical Examination.  Recruitment publicity is carried out on all India basis through advertisements in all leading National & Regional newspapers and Employment News in December / January and June/ July every year. Publicity material is also dispatched to a large number of schools / colleges and all Zilla Sainik Boards. The local administration carries out the publicity drive in rural / backward areas through local media. 

How to Apply : 
The application form in the prescribed format may be typed on plain paper or downloaded from the website of Indian Navy. The forms will be published in important Newspapers. Candidates applying for more than one type of entry are required to submit separate applications. However, only one application form is to be filled for a particular entry. Choice of entry is to be clearly indicated on the application form. You can apply only for one entry between MR Cook / MR Steward/ NMR Topass in a batch. All applications for AA and SSR, MR, MUS, NMR are to be addressed to the authority promulgated and should reach the authority only through ordinary post.

The following documents should attached with the application :

  • Application is to be filled in capital letters with one recent Passport size photograph pasted at the top right corner and one spare recent Passport size photos with the candidate's name written on the reverse attached along with the form (In the absence of recent photograph candidate will not be allowed to appear in the examination)
  • Attested copy (by Gazetted officer only, indicating name, designation and phone Numbers below signature) of the following certificates:}
    (i) Matric /equivalent certificate for verification of date of birth.
    (ii) Mark sheet and certificate of Diploma/Higher Board examination/ Matriculation as applicable
    (iii) Domicile certificate
  • Two self addressed envelopes of size 22 x 10 cms with Rs 10/- stamp affixed on one envelope and one envelope without stamp is to be submitted alongwith the application form.(White colour envelop for AA entry and brown colour for SSR/MR/NMR entry). On top of the envelope containing the application the Type of Entry, name of District, Percentage in exam and name of Exam passed is to be clearly written 

Indian Navy conducts recruitment for enrolling sailor recruits at 34 examination centres across the country. Candidates are permitted to appear for examination at one centre for recruitment in accordance with the domicile certificate issued by the District level Government authorities.

Call-Up letters, indicating date, time and place for examination as scheduled are sent to the eligible shortlisted candidates.

AA/ SSR/ MR/ NMR

Written Exam
Written exam will be conducted at the designated centre on the promulgated date and time. The objective type 60 minutes duration question paper will be bilingual (Hindi & English) and comprise of four sections i.e. English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge.

The Non Matric entry question paper will of 40 minutes duration and it comprise two sections i.e. Mathematics and General Knowledge.

The candidates are required to pass in all sections and in aggregate.

Physical Fitness Tests (PFT) 
Candidates who qualify the written test are permitted to undergo PFT which consist of 1.6 Km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 25 squat ups (Uthak Baithak) and 10 Push-ups. Candidates undergoing PFT will do so at their own risk. Those who qualify PFT, are taken for Medical Examination.

Medical Test
Entry level Medical standards are different for different entries. Medical examination will be conducted by authorised military doctors as per medical standard prescribed in current regulations applicable to sailors on entry. Candidates declared temporary unfit during medical examination can avail specialist review from the specified Military hospital within a maximum period of 21 days. Those who declared permanent unfit can appeal for specialist opinion in a Military Hospital on payment of a requisite amount by Military Receivable Order (MRO) in the Government Treasury within 21 days. Medical fitness certificate from other than that of the specialist opinion in the designated Military Hospital will NOT be considered. 

All the selected candidates, prior to enrolment, have to undergo a  Final Enrolment Medical examination at INS Chilka (Orissa). 

Musicians

The Director of Music (DOM) at INS Kunjali will be responsible for conduct of recruitment for Musician sailors as per schedule promulgated by IHQ MOD (Navy). All applications for MR (Musician) entry has to be addressed to The Commanding Officer, (for Director of Music), INS Kunjali, Colaba, Mumbai - 400 005. 

Application procedure and selection procedure for MR (Musician) entry is same as that of AA/ SSR/ MR/ NMR entry. 

The preliminary screening and Medical examination would be carried out at following Naval Recruitment Establishments (NREs) by a team nominated by DOM.

Indian Navy Sailor : Medical Standards

The candidate should be physically and medically fit for enrolment into Indian Navy. Candidate should possess good mental and physical health, should be free from any disease / disability and have no cardio vascular disease, surgical deformities like Knock-Knees, Flat-Foot. Candidate should not have a past history of fits or psychiatric ailments Vericose-vein etc. He should not have any type of infection in the ears. Medical examination will be conducted by authorized Military Doctors as per medical standard prescribed under current regulations applicable to the sailors of Indian Navy on entry. 

Visual Standard : 
Candidate should possess Colour perception standard of CP II and Eyes Visual standards should meet the under mentioned prescribed standards for both the conditions that is with glasses and without glasses.

Physical Standard :

Pay Scale :

All the sailors have been divided into two group viz 'X' and 'Y'. Artificer Apprentices fall under 'X' group and rest of the sailors in group 'Y'.

All recruits shall receive a stipend during their training period at the rate of Rs. 5700 per month. On successful completion of training Grade Pay, Military Service Pay, Group 'X' pay (if applicable), Dearness Allowance and allowances of the trade to which they stand allotted less the stipend already paid. The rate of stipend will be increased by 50% every time the DA payable on revised pay band goes up by 50%.

The promotion till the rank of a 'Leading' is on a time scale basics. The promotion to Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer is vacancy based and the promotion to Master Chief Petty Officer I class and II class is by selection. All promotions are subject to your clearing the required qualification course /exams on time and meet the sea service, physical and medical requirement for your branch.

 

Career Options in Indian Navy : Medical Officers

The Armed Forces Medical Services is amongst one of the best options available to a medical graduate in our country. As an officer in the Army Medical Corps, a candidate is liable to be employed in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force in any part of the country or world. The Armed Forces offer a prestigious and professionally satisfying career for doctors as commissioned officers with high status associated with Group A gazetted posts of Central Government. 

The medical services in the Navy are delivered through a network of hospitals spread throughout the length and breadth of the country. As a doctor in the Navy, one can have an opportunity to learn and practice military medicine and look after the health of the men in uniform and their families both in peace and war. There are ample avenues to specialize in basic specialities and super specialities fields like Physiotherapy, Advance Nursing, Radiography, Lab Assistant, Dental Operation Room Assistant and Blood Transfusion etc. 

Most of the postgraduate courses are conducted at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune and various other teaching hospitals of the Armed Forces. However the service also offers opportunities to avail study leave at Government expense for the super-speciality courses at reputed civil institutions in India and abroad.

Selection Procedure

Recruitment to the medical posts are through Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC). 

50% graduate passing out from the Armed Forces Medical College Pune are taken directly into Permanent Commission and the rest are offered Short Service Commission. Doctors from civil medical colleges are offered only SSC entry. SSC officers are required to serve for a minimum period of 5 years. The SSC may be extended by another two terms of 5 years and then 4 years upto a maximum of 14 years. AFMC graduates offered SSC are required to serve for a minimum period of 7 years extendable by another 7 years.

Short Service Commission

Notification for the post of doctors (male and female) in Indian Navy through SSC are published in leading newspapers twice a year. Eligible candidates are called for interview at New Delhi to assess their merit and suitability for grant of Short Service Commission in the Army Medical Corps and subsequent secondment to the Navy. Based on the results of the interview, candidates who have been short listed are subjected to medical examination at designated Armed Forces hospitals in New Delhi. Medically fit candidates are granted commission subject to verification procedures as deemed necessary and required for commissioning.

Permanent Commission

SSC officers are allowed three chances to appear in departmental interviews for grant of Permanent Commision at any time after completion of two years SSC service ie two chances in first tenure of five years and one chance in second tenure of five years but before completion of nine years and six months of service. Also, there should be no break in service and they should fulfill the conditions of eligibility laid down. The age limit for granting PC for different professional educational qualification are : 
MBBS (Max. 30 years)
Post Graduate Diploma (Max. 31 years)
Post Graduate MD/MS (Max. 35 years)

Army Medical Corps (AMC) - Includes Medical Branch of Indian Navy

  • Educational Qualifications
    -
     1. Applicants must posses a medical qualification of an Indian University or a foreign medical qualification recognised by the Medical Council of India. They must also be registered with any of the state councils or equivalent registering authority.
    2. Incentives : An antedate of 3 years seniority for post graduates and 2 years for post graduate diploma recognised by MCI and 6 months for a house job, done at a recognised hospital to fresh entrants.
    3. A doctor who has done a house job and also a post graduate qualification will be eligible for a maximum antedate seniority of 42 months.

Selection is held once a year in Jul / Aug at Delhi. Advertisement published in National / Regional newspapers in Mar/Apr every year.

Selection is held once a year through a written exam on all India basis followed by an interview at Pune. 50% cadets are granted SSC after passing out. Advertisement published in National / Regional newspapers in Jan every year.

Army Dental Corps (ADC) - Includes Dental Branch of Indian Navy

    - 28 Years (for BDS)
    - 30 Years (for MDS)
  • Educational Qualifications
    1. BDS with minimum 60% marks in final year / MDS from a recognised College or University.
    2. Should have completed one year rotatory internship recognised by the Dental Council of India.
    3. Should be in possession of Permanent Dental Registration Certificate.

Pay and allowances and terms and conditions of service, except the duration of service and provision of retirement benefits are broadly similar for both types of commission.

The rank granted on first appointment in the AMC are : 

  •  Captain/ Surgeon Lieutenant/ Flight Lieutenant - Applicable to doctors commissioned from civil who have acquired their Permanent Medical Registration Certificate.
  •  Lieutenant/ Surgeon Sub Lieutenant/ Flying Officer - Applicable to Medical cadets passing out from AFMC Pune, till completion of their internship in Service hospitals.

Promotion till the rank of Lieutenant Colonel/ Surgeon Commander/ Wing Commander is by time subject to satisfactory service and fitness for the higher rank. Further promotion to higher ranks is by selection based on vacancies. If an officer does not get promoted to the rank of Colonel/ Surgeon Captain/ Group Captain by selection grade, then he/she is granted time scale promotion to the rank of Colonel/ Surgeon Captain/ Group Captain (Time Scale) on completion of 24 years of reckonable commissioned service.
